"The glory of young men is their strength, gray hair the splendor of the old." Proverbs 20:29
My thirteen year old son and I have been running the river run near our home for some time now. It was only about three years ago that he was finally able to run a few miles without stopping, and although I often slowed my pace to allow him to keep up, we've been a pretty good match lately. Today all that changed. During this morning's run, I was a quarter of a mile behind him after only two miles. And... although I never made up the distance, I DID notice that my gracious son was slowing down to try and let the "old man" catch up. After our run was over he even insisted that we not tell the family that he beat me so badly. Instead I suggested that we tell them all about it, and that today would instead become a line of demarcation for him. Today my son begins a new leg in what we call "man training" (borrowed from my brother in law and his son). Today I back up even farther and allow him to make more leadership decisions and also to bear the consequences (both good and bad) of those decisions. We'll still be as close as ever, but Lord willing, one day he'll be a husband and father and, he needs to become a spiritual leader long before that happens.
I, on the other hand, don't intend to slow down just yet. I'll keep pushing "Little Jim" both on the track and in life. But as many have pointed out lately, my hair is turning more gray every day. I know I'm still young, but just like each of us, one day I'll breath my last breath. I owe it to my son to teach him well... and so does every parent blessed with even one child.
"Even when I am old and gray, do not forsake me, O God, till I declare your power to the next generation, your might to all who are to come." Psalm 71:18
