During my twenty years in the U.S. Air Force, I saw a marked decrease in the manners of the recruits we would see. When I was a young troop, we were taught to stand up in the presence of just about anyone senior to us, and to treat everyone with respect. Even simple things like answering the telephone or meeting someone on the street were done with a reverence or respect for the senior individual. What's almost laughable is that most of us didn't have to be trained about those things. We already knew that we shouldn't wear a hat indoors, or that we should stand up when someone senior to us approached our desk. Near the end of my career, not only did young people not know these things, but many of them thought these little shows of respect were ridiculous. "Hey, he may have more rank than me, but I don't stand up for anybody," seemed to be a standard reply. No doubt it was easier to see among the military's rules and regulations, but similar things happened in society at large. Today, it's almost a rarity to see a gentleman open a door for a lady--even if the lady is walking with the man! I've also noticed a severe lack of respect for the elderly. "Turn in your license old lady. You can't drive," was a comment I heard screamed just recently. Of course yelling at a woman on the street is one thing, but I see young people bad-mouthing their parents and grandparents, too. It honestly makes my cringe when I hear it! As Christians, the Scriptures make it clear that we need to give everyone the respect that is due them. And when we're talking about the aged, the Bible is even more clear. From my understanding of God's Word, I would even go so far as to say that respect for one's elders IS respect for God.
"Rise in the presence of the aged, show respect for the elderly and revere your God. I am the Lord." Leviticus 19:32
