Years ago in Dayton, Ohio, a worker accidentally hooked up a nitrogen bottle to a nursing home's oxygen system. As you might imagine, several people immediately died, and several more died in the days following the event as a result of injuries to their lungs. What a tragedy it was to watch the news and see these people being carried out of the nursing home dead. And what made it even worse was watching as their families screamed, "Why?, Why? It wasn't his or her time yet!" Now imagine for a minute that you are the worker who connected the wrong tank to the oxygen line. What in the world could make you feel better as you realized what had happened and that YOU were responsible? You were the one who was supposed to be providing a lifeline for these sick people, and instead you killed them! Instead of giving them life-giving oxygen, you delivered them death... and why? I later read that the worker had some concerns that he wasn't connecting things right, but somehow he disregarded his own concerns in favor of getting the job done quickly--He had other things on his schedule.
In the Christian life, you and I are supposed to be not only living the glorious life Jesus has granted us, but we are also supposed to be sharing it with others. That's our mission... to share Jesus Christ with a dying world. I wonder... if you're not about that mission daily, what could possibly comfort you as you face your Savior on Judgement Day? I imagine our Lord saying something like this... "_______ (insert name), you were supposed to be connecting these people to a life-giving Savior. Even though I repeatedly sent you pangs of guilt and concern, you were just too busy to care. You were supposed to be giving life! Instead, through your selfishness, those who saw your Christianity as shallow and worthless were instead pushed into the arms of Satan."
"Go, stand in the temple courts," he said, "and tell the people the full message of this new life." Acts 5:20
