If you've ever had a close family member die, then you know the pain associated with the death of a loved one. Now imagine that it's even worse--someone close to you is murdered! "That's not fair!," we'd scream... and we'd be right! It would take months, or maybe even years before some would be able to have a normal conversation. Believe it or not, this happened to Jesus one day. His friend, His cousin, the prophet who'd told of His coming... and the man of God who had baptized him (all one in the same), was beheaded for his faith. Jesus, torn by every emotion you can imagine, quietly slipped into a boat and paddled away so He could be alone. Who wouldn't want to be alone? He needed time to Himself! But the people wouldn't allow it. They followed Jesus and brought Him their sick for Him to heal. And so He told them to get lost because His cousin was just killed! Nope! He said nothing of the sort. He forgot about Himself and He healed their sick. Then, because they had followed Him to where there was no food, He performed a miracle to feed thousands of them. In possibly the darkest moment He'd had since His public ministry began, Jesus focused not on Himself, but on others. That's what He did when His cousin was killed... and that's what He did when our sins later demanded His death!
"When Jesus heard what had happened, he withdrew by boat privately to a solitary place. Hearing of this, the crowds followed him on foot from the towns. When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them and healed their sick." Matthew 14:13-14
