What a great example Jesus set for His disciples as he sat and washed each of their feet the evening before He was to give His life for them. It was unheard of for anyone but the lowest ranking servant to wash anyone's feet. Of course, it was also unheard of for a God to Sacrifice His own Son for sinners! Jesus lowered Himself to that position with the washing of feet and with going to the Cross. Jesus then challenged His disciples to go out and serve others like they'd been served by Him. The story of Jesus' foot washing has been shared in probably every Christian church on more than one occasion, but I believe we often distort the deeper truths behind it. On one hand we have people believing they're not worthy because they don't serve enough. On the other, we have people believing they ARE worthy because they spend much time serving others. The point that both groups quickly miss is that when it was Peter's turn to be washed, He argued with Jesus about it! Peter didn't believe it was right for Jesus to stoop so low... What Peter was missing was the deeper truth that Jesus MUST clean EVERYONE who comes to Him. Serve as Jesus commanded, but don't forget that without Him washing our sins away with His blood, we'll pay for them in an eternal hell.
Jesus' response to Peter is the same response He has for the world today....
"Jesus answered, 'Unless I wash you, you have no part with me.'" John 12:47
