In commonly used words, "zealous" could probably be better explained as "fired up!" A new Christian can often be quite zealous. If you've ever shopped for a car you might describe your salesperson as "zealous" in the way he attacks the sale. "Zeal" is a wonderful thing, but someone who is zealous without sufficient knowledge will often still not get far. Take the car salesperson who's "fired up" to make the sale, but knows little about the cars, interest rates, or the forms he needs to fill out! Zeal alone just won't get it! Similarly, as a leader in a Christian ministry, I'm always excited when I see someone approach ministry with zeal, but I'd often rather have a new person approach ministry slowly and methodically, only throwing themselves into it fully once they understand the sacrifices involved. Often Christians can get a bad name and can give others a bad name because they confuse zeal for faith. The two are not the same. Better to have given something lots of prayer and consideration before you start and then finish what you start than to start something ignorantly and not finish it.
"It is not good to have zeal without knowledge, nor to be hasty and miss the way." Proverbs 19:2
