I've always thought the phrase "genuine imitation" was what they call a contradiction of terms. That was until the day I heard my oldest daughter remarking to a friend, "I'm going to discipline my children the way my father disciplined me." I don't think anything could have touched my heart more than to hear that my own child wanted to imitate me--To actually treat her children the way I had treated her. That day the phrase "genuine imitation" took on a whole new meaning for me. In addition to helping me understand what a powerful example my actions have over my children and how they react to the world around them, it also gave me at least a small understanding of how God must feel when we even attempt to imitate Him. We've probably all heard the old saying, "Imitation is the greatest form of flattery," and although the word "flattery" probably doesn't afford God the honor we owe Him, I'm positive that we should attempt to imitate God with every fiber of our being. The simplest test I've ever heard of is to honestly ask yourself the question, "When people look at me, do they see my Lord in me?".
"Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children and life a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God." Ephesians 5:1
